mission | onyx

onyx was historically used as a medium from which pottery and sculptures were made. In the same way onyx aims to be a trusted medium for our communities to shape their thoughts, writing and artworks from.

Founded in 2018, onyx was forged to exist as an authentic creative medium from which Black artists, writers and creatives can authentically shape and form their work.

As a Black independent publication, our vision is to provide a long-term publishing infrastructure that combats the history of suppression and devaluation of Black creative artistry and talent within mainstream publishing. Our mission to provide an alternative and sustainable community-led creative space that authentically champions new and emerging talented liberation-focused Black creatives through print and publication. Our goal is to generate equitable creative publication opportunities and for marginalised Black creatives to gather and build long-lasting communal frameworks to flourish amidst an exclusionary publishing industry that remains, ‘90% white in output’ (Guardian) .

We are dedicated to supporting Black creative talent, especially those addressing of dismantling disparities as we believe the voices with lived experience hold the most tangible narratives for social cohesion. We center Black creatives living within socioeconomic disparities as we recognise how these disparities are only exacerbated within the creative industries that remain predominantly middle-class and white.

onyx achieves this by commissioning the talented creatives we support above industry rates and pushing for more equitable profit models via revenue generation from the magazine. We also provide gatherings and editorial development to foster connection, belonging and development for Black creatives. Orientated by principles of collectivism and Disability Justice, we strive to work from the margins to ensure onyx magazine remains an independent Black arts magazine and organisation creating liberating infrastructure for those discarded and overlooked by mainstream institutions.

We remain dedicated to support talented liberation-focused Black writers and artists through publishing and amplify their work as well as curating developmental events that incubate authentic connection.

To date onyx has published over 3,000 sold-out copies of the magazine and published and commissioned over 80 Black poets, writers and artists.
