POETRY: A MOTHER'S MO(U)RNING

A mother’s mo(u)rning is my response to seeing George Floyd’s death carelessly plastered across (social) media and the protests that followed. I also reflect on the incessant struggle against oppression, and the statement by James Baldwin “It has taken my father's time, my mother's time, my uncle's time, my brothers' and my sisters' time, my nieces' and my nephews' time. How much time do you want for your ‘progress’?”.

A Mother’s Mo(u)rning

manufacturing consent

out of gasps for air

to share

worldwide

can he not die dignified?

smoke screens

a mother screams

for her son’s

lungs

to fill

‘til

she is breathless

too

opening her fist

into hands

up don't

Shoot

is all they choose

to hear

she stumbles back

alarmed

and disarmed

from patience

her womb

aches and cries

for her baby boy

to live

in a world

that cares
